    Low-carbon Benchmark in the Context of “Dual Carbon” : Luoyang Chandong Sewage Treatment Plant of BEWG 2021-07-14

    From July 13 to 15, the 2021 Environmental Protection Industry Innovation and Development Conference sponsored by China Association of Environmental Protection Industry   (CAEPI) was held in Beijing. The first batch of low-carbon operation cases of sewage treatment in villages and towns were released at the conference, and Luoyang Chandong Sewage Treatment Plant of BEWG was successfully selected as the only project verified by experts on site.
     
    From June 24 to 25, the CAEPI organized industry review experts to come to Luoyang Chandong Sewage Treatment Plant of BEWG for inspection and acceptance, as well as communication with the owner units for verification. Mao Jianhua, vice president, Zhang Baolin, director, An Yingyu, general manager of the Product Center, Wei Bin, manager of the Sewage Management Department of the Operation Management Center of BEWG, et al. accompanied the visit.
     
    Luoyang Chandong Sewage Treatment Plant of BEWG is a key project of the People’s Government of Henan Province, which was awarded the 2010 National Quality Project Award.  The project has a design scale of 200,000 tons/day (with a long-term scale of 300,000 tons/day), which covers a total area of 24 hectares and a service area of about 30 km2. In terms of technology, it is provided with the advantages of energy saving, high efficiency, flexible operation, and obvious nitrogen and phosphate removal effects, and the effluent quality can reach the national Level A discharge standard.

    What are low-carbon water plants in the context of carbon peak and carbon neutrality?
     
    In recent years, with rapid development of China’s sewage treatment industry, the standards for measuring sewage treatment plants have also changed from a single technical standard to an overall standard for sustainable urban development. To find the right technology and the correct technical route, and deeply participate in coordinated emission reduction is an important support for building a low-carbon society, developing low-carbon economy, and realizing sustainable urban development.     Sustainable water quality

    General requirement: stable and reliable effluent quality, meeting the needs of sustainable recycling of water resources, and generally not lower than Grade A standard.
     
    Actual operation of Luoyang Chandong Sewage Treatment Plant: with highly impact-resistant process design and highly adaptive flexible operation control, the sewage treatment plant is provided with the ability to achieve stable treatment even with wide fluctuation in the influent water quality, and the effluent water quality stably reaches “Quasi-Ⅳ water quality", thereby becoming a “perpetual motion machine” to ensure sustainable recycling of water resources.
     
    Resources recycling

    General requirement: reasonable recycling of materials, which generally includes reclaimed water utilization, sludge utilization, etc.

    Actual operation of Luoyang Chandong Sewage Treatment Plant: in addition to plant reuse, some  is supplied to Huarun Shouyangshan Power Plant as circulating cooling water, and other is used for ecological water replenishment; the dewatered sludge is used for aerobic composting for landscaping, thereby becoming a “water and fertilizer factory" that continues to supply water and fertilizer resources to urban and rural areas.
     
    Being environmentally friendly

    General requirement: sensory comfort in terms of sight, hearing, smell, etc., no NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard), and can be included in the community.

    Actual operation of Luoyang Chandong Sewage Treatment Plant: with effective control of sludge, noise and odor, as well as ingenious design of buildings, gardens, and interactive facilities, a harmonious integration industrial facilities and community environment in terms of aesthetic significance and humanistic spirit can be achieved, thereby becoming an “industrial park” that serves the community.
     
    Energy utilization

    General requirement: recover energy from sewage or develop clean energy to increase the self-sufficiency rate of water plants, generally including biogas power generation, water source heat pump, photovoltaic power generation, etc.
     
    Actual operation of Luoyang Chandong Sewage Treatment Plant: arrange photovoltaic power generation devices by making use of the light-receiving area in the plant to significantly increase the self-sufficiency rate of energy resources, thereby becoming a “contemporaneous organism” in the field of sewage treatment.
     
    Low-carbon operation

    General requirement: energy saving and consumption reduction, as well as reducing carbon emissions.

     Actual operation of Luoyang Chandong Sewage Treatment Plant: achieve low-carbon operation of wastewater treatment plants through process optimization, energy-saving and technological transformation, photovoltaic utilization, lean management, and smart operation; achieve resource recycling through continuous output of water and fertilizer resources, thereby becoming a compatible “low-carbon benchmark water plant”.
